LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A construction worker became trapped for more than eight hours when the trench he was working in suddenly collapsed Thursday afternoon in Falls Church.

The man was working in a 15-foot deep trench in the 7400 block of Venice Street when the soil gave way and buried him up to his chest around 4 p.m., according to Fairfax County Police Captain Robert Konczal.

The rescue efforts were hampered by poor soil conditions caused by recent heavy rainfall, officials say.

Emergency workers were able to free the man shortly after midnight.

Crews were able to communicate with the trapped worker throughout the ordeal, Konczal says. He was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition.
