WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Rev. Al Sharpton warns that Dave Brat’s primary win over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor threatens civil rights in the United States.

“He, as now a hero of the Party, will embolden them to really come with more far right-wing politics which threatens voting rights, civil rights, immigration rights all over this country,” Sharpton told “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.”

Sharpton, who believes Brat’s win will cause a “political civil war” within the GOP, is calling on African-Americans to “mobilize” to get out and vote during this year’s midterm elections.

“We’ve got to really be ready to mobilize to come out and we cannot be divided,” Sharpton stated. “When the president is standing up on everything from voting rights to my brother’s keeper, we can’t have debates.”

Sharpton continued: “We all need to put our best foot forward and not be divided because the other side has just got emboldened by this Brat win over Cantor. He’s more than a brat, he’s a threat.”

Brat stunned the political world Tuesday, handily defeating Cantor in the Virginia GOP primary, 56 to 44 percent. Cantor shelled out nearly $5 million on the primary while Brat only spent $122,000.
