NEW YORK (AP) — Hillary Clinton says what’s happening in Iraq is “a dreadful, deteriorating situation” and she’s surprised by the effectiveness of the al Qaeda-inspired group that has captured major cities there.
The former secretary of state and potential 2016 presidential contender weighed in Thursday on the group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, that led this week’s seizure of key Sunni-dominated cities in Iraq. The group has vowed to march to Baghdad.
Clinton made the remarks during an event with the president of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
She says she was surprised by how effective the group has been at taking cities and trying to erase boundaries.
Clinton is promoting her new book, “Hard Choices.” She’ll attend the World Resource Institute’s Courage to Lead luncheon in the afternoon.
