PARIS (CBS DC) – Sometimes love will break your heart…sometimes it will break a bridge.
Gendarmes quickly evacuated a bridge in central Paris because a section of its railing collapsed under the collective weight of tokens of affection.
The Pont des Arts footbridge has become a popular tourist site for lovers, where they attach a padlock bearing their names and throw the key into the Seine.
The practice began in 2008, copying similar gestures in other European cities.
But the “locks of love” has become irresistible for romantics around the world, and the footbridge in the shadow of the Louvre is now festooned with locks that cover the railings all along its 500-foot span.
Architects and city officials erected a barrier to block access to the bridge but promise it will soon reopen.
