LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) – A man has died after a car plunged into the Anacostia River in southeast Washington, officials say.

Rescue crews searched for the vehicle Sunday morning after the car overturned into the water near the John Philip Sousa Bridge around 8 a.m.

D.C. Police say the man was found inside the vehicle hours later.

The man was taken to a local hospital but could not be revived.

It is not immediately clear how the car went into the water.
