LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Today is National Donut Day! And, who would have thought that a day celebrating America’s favorite breakfast pastry is not just another arbitrary holiday celebrating indulgences (here’s looking at you, National Potato Chip Day and National Margarita Day)?
According to the Salvation Army, the organization started National Donut Day during the Great Depression “as a way to raise funds and bring awareness to The Salvation Army’s social service programs.”
It commemorates the “donut lassies” of World War I, female Salvation Army volunteers who provided American and Allied soldiers with spiritual aid and comforts in the form of writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and home-cooked meals, and of course, donuts. Yeah, we had no clue, either.
