LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A man was seriously hurt after he was struck by a train at the Bethesda Metro station Tuesday evening.

Metro officials say a 50-year-old man suffered a medical emergency while on the station platform and accidentally fell onto the tracks just after 5 p.m.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says the man was hit by a train pulling into the Red Line station at a low speed. The man was conscious and breathing when rescue crews arrived at the scene, Piringer says.

Power to the station had to be shut down before the man could be removed from the tracks, Piringer says.

The man has been taken to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Red Line trains bypassed the Bethesda station for about 45 minutes but service since has resumed.
