WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — The Junkies were delighted to be joined in studio by professional golfers Lexi Thompson and Soyeon Ryu on Monday, when Lurch decided to ask the former if her father was a psychopath.
Lurch, we recently learned, has taken the angry, screaming softball dad approach in mentoring his two daughters, and clearly wanted to find some commonality between he and a man who put his daughter on a path to have won her first LPGA Major Championship by the age of 19.
“I played soccer and basketball growing up, too, but I grew up on a golf course, two older brothers that played; I didn’t really have a choice, but I loved golf in the beginning,” Thompson explained.
“Is your dad kind of psycho about it?” Lurch asked.
“I love this show!” Ryu laughed.
“I have two daughters that play softball, they don’t play golf, but I’m just manic about them not making mistakes, and doing well, succeeding,” Lurch said.
“No, you’re a true psycho,” EB corrected him.
“I am, but I’m guessing her dad might be a little similar,” Lurch said.
“Well, explain what you do with your girls in softball,” EB said. “When your girl plays left field, where are you?”
“Right on the left field line, outside the fence,” Lurch said. “When she goes to right field, I’m on the right field line.”
“My dad’s right outside the ropes when he’s watching me,” Thompson laughed.
“Yea, see, it’s probably the same way,” Lurch said.
What’s funny about this, is unbeknownst to Lurch, but among Thompson’s entourage who made the trip to the Junkies’ Lanham studio was Thompson’s mother, standing just feet away when Lurch inquired about the overzealous nature of her father.
“She was just sitting right next to me, right now,” Thompson said.
“I’m sorry,” Lurch apologized. “Dad’s not here, right?”
“No, my dad’s not here,” Thompson said. “Just my mom.”
Ryu, 23, made her way into the professional ranks on an advanced track as well, playing in her first pro tournament at the age of 15.
You can see both play locally at the LPGA’s Inaugural “International Crown”, to be played at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. between July 24-27.
