LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — The nation’s capital is the fitness capital of America, according to a new report.
The American College of Sports Medicine on Wednesday released its seventh annual “American Fitness Index,” which ranks the country’s 50 largest cities based on health and fitness levels.
Washington is ranked in the top spot overall, coming in first in community health and third in personal health, according to the study.
Baltimore ranked 25th in the nation, with its community health ranking 13th and its personal health coming in at 33rd.
Minneapolis ranks second overall, with Portland (Ore.), Denver, and San Francisco rounding out the nation’s top five. Memphis comes in at 50th.
Other mid-Atlantic cities Philadelphia, Richmond and Virginia Beach, rank 20th, 21st and 22nd, respectively.
The list measures infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage a healthy and fit lifestyle.
