LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A man is hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by a police car in Gaithersburg Tuesday night.
The 61-year-old African-American man was in the roadway near Chestnut Street and East Diamond Avenue when an officer responding to a domestic violence call hit him with his cruiser around 10:54 p.m., police say.
A preliminary investigation shows the man was not inside of a crosswalk and the cruiser’s lights and sirens were activated when the collision occurred, according to police.
Authorities say the cruiser’s airbag did not deploy and the officer was not injured.
The officer immediately radioed for help and began attending to the man.
The man has been identified as Otto Reed, of Gaithersburg.
The officer involved in the collision is identified as Drew Soldano, a 7-year veteran of the department. Following protocol, Officer Soldano is currently on paid, administrative leave.
Police are continuing to investigate a number of factors in the crash including the speed of the cruiser and the cycle of a nearby traffic signal.
