Speed Cameras

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Fourteen automated speed cameras targeting heavy-footed drivers will debut Tuesday in the District.

For the first 30 days the cameras are operational, violators will receive only warning tickets in the mail. Once the grace period has expired regular moving citations with accompanying fines will be issued.

Police say speed and restricted truck traffic have been problematic in the areas where the cameras have been placed.

Gary Yeager already receives about two tickets a month from existing cameras in the District. The additional enforcement may push that average northward.

“It’s not something that you want to do,” Yeager said. “It’s just that your coming in and trying to stay with the flow of traffic. Before you know it… ‘Bam!’ you’re popped.”
