LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Three teens have been arrested and charged with killing a 19-year-old man in what Prince George’s County police are calling a gang-related crime.
Police arrested 15-year-old Nelson Rivera-Anaya of Lanham, 14-year-old Angel Contreras of Silver Spring, and an unidentified 13-year-old boy and charged them with first-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Akinleye Warner, who was found stabbed to death Saturday night on the Northwest Branch Trail in Langley Park.
Police say Warner was assaulted and stabbed multiple times in the upper body during a drug deal gone wrong in the park late Saturday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene when police and medical personnel arrived at about 11 p.m.
The three teenaged suspects are gang members who killed Warner to gain respect and notoriety within their gang, police say.
All three suspects attend or attended Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi. Police say they have increased patrols at the school since the crime and continue to add security to ensure the safety of students.
Authorities say they are working with school officials to investigate any more possible gang-related activity.
Rivera-Anaya and Contreras are being held at the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status. The 13-year-old suspect — who can’t be charged as an adult under state law — is being held at the Cheltenham Youth Facility.
