LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The New York Times already showed us where the Washington Nationals fandom ends and the Baltimore Orioles fandom begins. Now the Times has made a similar map illustrating where Wizards fans live.
According to The Times’ research, which is based on millions of people’s public preferences on Facebook and organized by zip code, Wizards fans are unsurprisingly concentrated in D.C. and some of the surrounding suburbs, including a large swath of Southern Maryland, the Mount Airy/Olney area of Maryland and a few northern Virginia towns like Alexandria, Mount Vernon and Burke.
Also not surprising, much larger parts of Maryland and Virginia seem to be full of L.A. Lakers and Miami Heat fans.
The Wizards’ geographical fanbase is similar in size to three of its fellow Southeast Division teams — the Orlando Magic, the Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Bobcats. The Miami Heat has the furthest reach by far.
