EDMONSTON, Md. — Former Gov. Parris Glendening is endorsing Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown for governor.

Glendening on Monday cited Brown’s work in encouraging smart growth and environmental protections as a big part of the reason why he is backing the lieutenant governor.

Glendening is an advocate for smart growth in Maryland. He was governor from 1995 to 2003.

Glendening, Brown and Brown’s running mate, Ken Ulman, toured the Edmonston Green Street Project in Prince George’s County before the announcement. The project aims to make roads more environmentally friendly by making repairs that with recyclable material to reduce runoff and adding sidewalks and bike lanes.

Brown is running against Attorney General Doug Gansler and Del. Heather Mizeur in the Democratic primary, which is scheduled for June 24.
