LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Police say they have arrested a man they say is responsible for the rape along a trail in Silver Spring, just days after releasing a composite sketch to the public.
On Monday, Maryland-National Capital Park Police and Montgomery County Police responded to a rape that occurred along a trail in Northwest Branch Park. On Friday morning, park police detectives returned to the area to look for additional evidence.
While in the area, they observed a backpack that matched the description the victim stated the man has in his possession during the crime, police say. As police walked closer to the backpack, they saw a man who matched the description of the suspect.
The man was also wearing a beaded necklace that matched the description the victim gave. Officers were able to detain the man and he was later transported to Montgomery County Police headquarters.
The man was questioned by detectives when he admitted involvement in the assault. Joaquin A. Orellana Torres, 24, of Hyattsville, was charged with one count of first-degree rape and one count of armed robbery.
