CSX Train Carrying 8,000 Tons Of Coal Derails In Bowie

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A CSX train carrying thousands of tons of coal derailed early Thursday morning in Bowie.

The derailment occurred near the Brady Building at Annapolis Road and Laurel Bowie Road around 2:30 a.m., authorities say. Three locomotives and 10 cars rolled off the tracks but did not overturn.

Three employees aboard the train were not injured in the derailment, officials say.

The train was carrying approximately 8,000 tons of coal, according to the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department.

There was no immediate hazmat concern, officials say.

CSX crews are working to clear the scene.
