WASHINGTON — District of Columbia officials have dropped a proposed 24-hour waiting period for people who want to get a tattoo or a body piercing.

The city’s Department of Health proposed regulations for tattoo parlors in September. Those included a rule that a tattoo artist could not apply a tattoo until at least 24 hours after a customer requested it. A body piercings rule was similar.

But the department said Thursday it has abandoned those proposals because of strong public opposition. The regulations would have made Washington one of just a few places in the country with a tattoo waiting period.
