Pedestrian Hit by Va. Trooper on I-495

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Virginia State Police are investigating an accident in which a pedestrian was hit on I-495 by one of their own.

At 2:41 a.m. Saturday, a trooper was taking the exit ramp from I-495 north to Braddock Road when police say a pedestrian suddenly came from the left side of the ramp and ran into the travel lane. The trooper immediately swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the woman.

The side of the patrol car did strike the woman. The trooper stopped and administered aid to the woman until a rescue squad arrived on scene.

The 25-year-old Annandale, Va., woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

State police were able to locate a male nearby and are investigating the incident to determine what caused the woman to run into the travel lane.

The investigation is ongoing.
