MANASSAS, Va. (WNEW/AP) — A 9-year-old Virginia boy told police he brought a gun to school because he was being bullied.
Police say the boy brought a handgun with him to Ellis Elementary School in Manassas on Thursday morning.
Police say the boy showed the gun — which was disassembled in a carrying case and could not be fired — to several students, one of which notified a teacher.
School officials confiscated the gun and called police.
Prince William County Police spokeswoman Kim Chinn says the boy told police that he was being bullied. But Chinn said the boy didn’t threaten anyone with the weapon.
The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
Police say 29-year-old Travis Pettie Sr. — a known acquaintance of the boy — was arrested for not properly securing the handgun. He faces charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
