PASADENA, Md. (WNEW/AP) — A kayaker saw a red laser dot on his shirt before being shot in the stomach Saturday night while paddling in a creek in Anne Arundel County, police say.

The 56-year-old Reston, Va., man told police he was kayaking on Bodkin Creek in Pasadena, Md., at dusk Saturday when he saw a bonfire and heard what sounded like a party. That’s when police say the man saw a laser-like red dot on his shirt and felt pain in his abdomen.

The kayaker was unable to make it to shore until Sunday morning and was discovered by a resident. Police say the kayaker was taken to Shock Trauma with an injury that is not thought to be life-threatening.

The man told police he has family in Anne Arundel County and keeps his kayak in Bodkin Creek.

Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson says investigators have no suspects and the kayaker’s wound isn’t consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot.

The name of the kayaker has not been released. Natural Resources Police is investigating with the assistance of Anne Arundel County Police.

The investigation is ongoing.
