Police: College Professor Mailed Drugs To Jail Inmates
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Hampton University professor and three Newport News Jail inmates are facing drug charges after jail officials intercepted letters containing marijuana and heroin.
Newport News sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathleen Carey says a routine screening found mail addressed to Newport News inmates arrived on consecutive days this month containing marijuana, tobacco and rolling papers. A third letter that arrived at the jail contained heroin.
Carey says the mail was traced to 40-year-old Sharrieff Rahseem De’Johnette of Williamsburg.
Media outlets report De’Johnette is charged with conspiracy, heroin and marijuana distribution and delivering drugs to inmates. The three inmates face conspiracy and drug possession charges. One of them also faces a drug delivery charge.
De’Johnette, who teaches history at the college, has been suspended without pay.
