Small Plane Flips Over at Leesburg Airport

UPDATED: April 8, 2014 3:24 p.m.

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A small plane flipped over on a runway at a northern Virginia airport early Tuesday afternoon.

A Cessna C205 single-engine airplane was blown off runway 35 by a strong gust of wind and overturned as it attempted to land at Leesburg Executive Airport just after noon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Virginia State Police say the pilot — 52-year-old Robert Bailey Jr., of Fairfax Station, Va. — was the only person onboard and was not injured in the accident. The plane had taken off from Manassas.

Officials say the plane sustained substantial damage and the airport is currently closed.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.
