Capitol Heights, Md. (WNEW/AP) — Police in Prince George’s County are investigating after a police-involved shooting in which an armed man died.

The police department says it happened Saturday just before 4 a.m. on Marlboro Pike at Lee Jay Drive.

Police say after officers and witnesses heard a shot fired in the area, officers responded and saw a man leaving the area on foot and grabbing his side.

Police say two officers approached the man and one noticed the man reaching for a handgun in his waistband. The officer fired multiple times, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at Prince George’s Hospital Center.

The suspect who later died is identified as 24-year-old Robert Antonio Jones, of the 2700 block of Lorring Drive in Forestville.

Police say they recovered the man’s gun from the scene. The officer who fired his weapon is on routine administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

Officials identified the officer on Sunday as Officer Brian Newcomer, a nine-year law enforcement veteran, who works in patrol in the third district.
