WASHINGTON (CBS DC) — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made a surprise guest appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” Wednesday night, where she and host Jimmy Fallon performed a skit poking fun at Russian President Vladimir Putin among others.
Donning the balding comb-over look of the Russian president, Fallon’s “Putin” character is shown hanging up the phone with President Barack Obama after discussing the situation in Ukraine. He then dials Palin, who warned voters during the 2008 presidential campaign that if Obama was elected, his “indecision” and “moral equivalence” could encourage Russia to invade Ukraine.
“Since you’re so great at guessing my next move, who do you think I should invade next: I’m thinking Finland, Sweden, I heard Jamaica’s nice this time of year,” Putin asks the former Republican vice presidential candidate, in a faux Russian accent.
“No, my advice to you would be to get those troops out of Ukraine right now,” responds Palin.
Riffing on jokes made about her children’s names, Fallon and Palin talk about killing a bear with a gun versus Putin’s bare hands.
“You shoot bear? I prefer hand-to-hand-combat,” says Fallon.
The two then exchange jabs at the perceived differences in masculinity between Obama and Putin.
“That’s why everyone says you’re such a strong leader,” says Palin.
“Well I come from strong genes. President Obama, he comes from mom jeans,” Fallon responds, prompting the two to laugh.
But the two claim to hear “breathing” on the line, which cuts to a startled Obama listening in on the line.
“Wait, wait — I hear breathing on other end of phone. Maybe it’s NSA spying on us,” Fallon’s Putin says.
After asking to excuse himself from their conversation to pick up some vodka, Palin responds by physically handing some herself.
“Well actually, Alaska’s not far from Russia,” says Palin, riffing on her infamous comment to Katie Couric in 2008.
“Alaska really is close to Russia, maybe I should invade?”
“I wouldn’t if I were you, Vlad. You may be able to take down a bear, but you’re no match for a Mama Grizzly,” says Palin, hanging up the phone to laughter and applause from “The Tonight Show” audience.
Palin’s new television show on the Sportsman Channel, “Amazing America with Sarah Palin,” debuts Thursday night.
