WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Organizers of the Blossom Kite Festival on the National Mall say the event has been canceled because of rainy weather.
The annual kite festival is part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The kite flying was originally supposed to take place Saturday near the Washington Monument. Organizers postponed the festival to Sunday because of poor weather. A second day of rainy weather forced the festival’s cancellation Sunday.
The festival began March 20 and will continue through April 13.
Several other events were also cancelled in the festival’s second weekend due to rain.
And, while the National Park Service says the average peak bloom date from 1992 through 2013 was March 31, this year’s is forecasted to be sometime between April 8 (a Tuesday) and April 12, the last Saturday of the event.
