Buzz Williams to Leave Marquette to Coach Virginia Tech Basketball

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Buzz Williams will leave Marquette University to become the new men’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech, Garry Parrish of CBS Sports has confirmed.

He’ll take over for James Johnson, who has struggled greatly (22-41) in the two seasons since being hired to succeed Seth Greenberg.

Williams has led Marquette to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five seasons, going as deep as the Elite Eight in 2013, following two consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances.

He boasts a 153-86 overall record in seven seasons as a head coach (with one season at New Orleans) and a 139-69 record in his six seasons commanding Marquette.

A formal announcement is expected to be made soon, according to Parrish.
