BALTIMORE — Notre Dame of Maryland University has named a New Jersey educator as its 14th president.

Marylou Yam, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, was named president Thursday. She will begin her new duties on July 1.

Yam was the first woman to serve as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Business Administration at Saint Peter’s.

Fifty-six-year-old Yam earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mercy College in New York. She earned a Ph.D. from Adelphi University, writing her dissertation on a model of how nurses can best care for battered women in emergency room settings.

Yam will succeed Joan Develin Coley, who took over for one year after the August resignation of Dr. James Conneely.
