BALTIMORE — Officials at the Maryland Zoo say Dolly, one of the oldest female African elephants in the herd, has been euthanized.
A zoo spokeswoman said Tuesday that Dolly was found lying down inside the facility’s barn on Sunday, and veterinarians determined she was gravely ill. A necropsy will be conducted.
Dolly was believed to be between 38 and 40 years old. Zoo officials say she was brought to the United States from Mozambique by a private owner in the late 1970s.
Dolly arrived at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore 1982, where pennies raised from local schoolchildren initially helped pay for her care.
The Zoo’s elephant herd now has four animals.
