NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (CBSDC) — A 6-year-old girl received more than 200 stitches in her head after a pit bull ripped off her skin during a mauling.
WTKR-TV reports that Yonni DuBose suffered a broken ankle and had her skin ripped off her head Sunday when a neighbor’s pit bull attacked her while she was playing with friends.
“There she was laying, covered in blood,” Nancy DuBose, Yonni’s grandmother, told WTKR.
A teenager and his stepdad saved Yonni’s life, prying the dog off her and pinning it to the ground.
“It was bad,” Bryan Wilson told WTKR. “Her scalp was ripped open and her ankle was broken.”
Bryan’s stepfather, Jason Pinkens, pulled the pit bull off Yonni.
“We all helped each other,” Pinkens told WTKR. “There’s more than one hero here, they’re just not here with me right now.”
The young girl is still hospitalized and has her dressing on her scalp changed three times a day. She’s already worried about her classmates making fun of her when she gets back to school.
“I said, ‘No, they won’t tease you once they realize you were hurt by a dog. You’ll be okay,’” the girl’s grandmother recalled to WTKR. “I said, ‘You can wear hats at school until your hair grows back.’”
The pit bull was taken in by Newport News Animal Control but no word yet on if the animal will be put down.
Animal Control says charges are pending for the dog’s owner following the investigation.
