LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Seven young adults were injured when a passenger van being chased by police lost control and flipped over on an exit ramp from Interstate 95 in Dale City, Tuesday morning.
A Fort Belvoir police officer spotted the van driving in an erratic manner and attempted to make a traffic stop, suspecting the driver may have been intoxicated, sometime before 2 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The driver then fled scene a high rate of speed and the officer began to pursue the van.
As the van attempted to exit I-95 onto Dale Boulevard it struck the left side of the ramp and a guard rail before it overturned. The vehicle was traveling around 100 mph at the time, according to multiple reports.
Four people were ejected from the van during the violent crash. All seven passengers — in their teens or early 20’s — were taken to the hospital by Medevac.
At least two of the passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.
The pursuing officer had fallen back and terminated the chase prior to the crash. The officer did not witness the crash, but did locate the wrecked vehicle a short time later.
The ramp to westbound Dale Boulevard (exit 165B) was closed for nearly five hours as police investigated the crash. The eastbound ramp and nearby car rest area remain open.
