WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – A three-vehicle crash on Rt. 340 in Frederick County claimed two lives, according to Maryland State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash at 12:08 p.m., after a Ford Expedition traveling eastbound on Mt. Zion Rd. lost control and crossed the center median into the westbound lanes.

The Expedition struck a Toyota Prius and a Honda Pilot, both traveling westbound. The male driver of the Expedition and the female driver of the Prius were pronounced dead at the scene.

They have since been identified as 68-year-old Danny Harrah of Williamsport, Md. and 44-year-old Patricia Hornick-Rexrode of Hampstead, Md.

Two other adults and two children, ages 13 and 8, were also injured. The adults were both flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The 8-year-old was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

All lanes were closed in both directions immediately following the crash. Westbound traffic was affected into the late afternoon.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing.
