High Speed Crash Sends Car Airborne, Into Tree On Capitol Hill

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A car traveling at a high rate of speed lost control and violently smashed into a tree in southeast Washington early Friday.

The car was traveling northbound on South Capitol Street when it crashed and went airborne and slammed into the tree at the intersection with D Street, SE around 3 a.m., according to United States Capitol Police. The intersection is a short distance from the Capitol and next to the Spirit of Justice Park.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital where their condition was not immediately available.

Police have closed a number of streets as a result of the investigation into the crash:

Washington Avenue, SE and D Street, SE (East Bound)

New Jersey Avenue, SE and D Street (West Bound)

Washington Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE (West Bound)

South Capitol St., SE from Washington Ave to C St., SE
