WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Another Bush in the White House might not be such a bad thing after all, says former first lady Barbara Bush.
The family matriarch made headlines last year when she suggested that she didn’t want her youngest son Jeb Bush to run for president.
“There are other people out there that are very qualified, and we’ve had enough Bushes,” she told NBC’s “Today” last April.
But speaking on Fox News, Mrs. Bush said “Maybe it’s OK” if Jeb does make a run for the office.
She clarified that her earlier comments were meant not as discouragement, but as concern that Jeb would be a target of criticism from George W. Bush’s two terms.
“It hurts when people criticize George W.,” she said. “Don’t ever do it in front of me, or behind me.”
She said if Jeb did decide to run, he would be a great candidate and a terrific president.
But she suggested that his heart may not be in presidential politics. “Maybe Jeb’s given all he should give,” she said. “He’s worked awfully hard for a long time.”
A CBS News/New York Times poll out last week showed a potential Jeb Bush run in 2016 would draw widespread support among self-identified Republicans. Forty-one percent said they’d like to see him seek the GOP nomination.
