ROCKVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) — Security will be tight around Montgomery College’s three campuses Wednesday following a threat about a school shooting.
A student at the college’s Rockville campus discovered the threat — the message “school shooting 3-5-14” written in a stairwell — last week, school spokesperson Elizabeth Homan said.
“Campus security officers at all three of our campuses, as well as our college Safety and Emergency Management Office, have been in touch with all the local police jurisdictions,” Homan said.
Students told WNEW’s Cameron Thompson that they were surprised by the threat.
“When I first got the email and read it, I didn’t really take much awareness about it. But as soon as I heard that it was on the news and about the more security being here, I took it with a little more caution,” said Jonathan, a student at the Rockville campus.
Fellow student Maria agreed.
“I didn’t take it serious, either, at the beginning because if someone is going to do it, I assume they’re going to do it. They’re not going to give a notice,” she said. “But maybe this person is asking for help.”
“I’m mostly, like, in shock, because you never really expect something like that to happen around here,” Jonathan added.
All three of the college’s campuses — Rockville, Germantown, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring — are open Wednesday, but students are being given leeway if they miss class.
“I actually plan to email my instructor on what her plans were — if she was going to keep class in session or not,” Jonathan said Tuesday.
This is the second recent threat at Montgomery College.
Last month, the message “big school shooting” was scrawled in a bathroom at the Germantown campus.
