WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — FedExField will play host to the 2014 Road to Brazil soccer finale between defending World Cup champion Spain and El Salvador, Washington Redskins officials announced Friday.
In an event billed as a “doubleheader extravaganza” — set for Saturday, June 7 — the friendly match between Spain and El Salvador will immediately be followed by an MLS regular-season match between hometown D.C. United and Columbus Crew. The United-Crew game originally was scheduled to be played at RFK Stadium in Washington.
Turkey will play Honduras on May 29 at RFK, and Ivory Coast meets Bosnia-Herzegovina the following day at a site to be announced.
This is the second marquee soccer match to be held at FedExField that has been announced in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, July 29, the stadium the Redskins call home will host a match between Manchester United and Inter Milan, as part of the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup.
“Once again, FedExField will serve as the No. 1 destination for American soccer fans to see the most prestigious teams in the world,” said Redskins Chief Marketing Officer Mitch Gershman. “We are honored to host these marquee matchups and proud to bring such high-profile events to the Washington D.C. region and our season ticket holders.”
Tickets are on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
