Elderly Woman Dies After Being Hit By Drifting Car in Edgewater

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A 73-year-old woman died Monday after being hit by a driverless car in Edgewater.

Police say Lee Sheila Mahoney was walking on Chesapeake Drive when a parked 2010 Ford Mustang began to drift down the hill behind her. The vehicle then struck her from behind and came to rest on top of her.

The 23-year-old owner of the car, David Adam Garman, saw it moving down the hill from inside a nearby house and ran to retrieve it.

Garman did not know, however, that Mahoney had been hit by the car, and proceeded to start it and back it up with her still underneath.

Emergency personnel transported Mahoney to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the primary cause of the crash is driver error. Police say Garman failed park the vehicle with its wheels turned properly towards the curb and with the parking brake set.

Investigators will be consulting with the State’s Attorney’s Office, which is customary in fatal crash investigations.
