LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Washington Capitals center and Swedish Olympian Nicklas Backstrom failed a drug test in Sochi and didn’t play in the gold medal game against Canada Sunday, the Associated Press reports.

Swedish Olympic Committee spokesman Bjorn Folin tells the AP that Backstrom tested positive for a banned substance, an ingredient in the allergy medication that he has taken for years.

The AP reports that he is the sixth athlete to fail a drug test at the games.

The Capitals released a statement about the incident Sunday. It reads:

Nicklas Backstrom did not participate in Team Sweden’s Olympic gold-medal game on Sunday due to the allergy medication he has been taking intermittently for seven years, including this season while playing for the Washington Capitals to combat severe allergies. The medicine was approved by the Swedish national team. It is not anticipated that this will impact his participation in NHL games.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
