LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — An overnight crash involving a tractor-trailer created massive delays on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway on Wednesday morning.
The truck struck another vehicle before skidding off the road and down an embankment before the cab came to rest in a wooded ravine along the ramp from Kenilworth Avenue.
The rear of the trailer only partially blocked the ramp, but the massive effort to pull it back up the incline forced authorities to close multiple lanes of Interstate 495 for much of the morning commute. The accident was moved to the shoulder by 8:30 a.m., allowing all four lanes of traffic to pass.
The closures created a backup in excess of 12 miles at the peak of rush hour, according to WNEW traffic reporter Lisa Baden.
A woman in a car involved in the accident was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police say.
