WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and his Russian national team suffered a devastating 3-1 defeat to Finland in the Men’s Ice Hockey Quarterfinal Playoff,  in front of their home crowd in Sochi on Wednesday.

Russia jumped out to an early first-period lead, but the Finns quickly responded with two goals in the same period, bringing the Sochi crowd to a nervous silence.

Tuukka Rask made 37 saves in the game for Finland, allowing just the one to get by, as the Russian team failed to perform to the expectations of the country playing host to the 2014 Winter Games.

Teemu Selanne and Mikael Granlund each had a goal and an assist for Finland.

After scoring the first goal, Russia went scoreless for the final 52 minutes of the game.

Story will be updated.
