LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A man was struck and killed by a car while attempting to flee the scene of a hit-and-run crash he was apparently involved in just minutes earlier in Loudoun County Tuesday night.

Police believe the man was a passenger in a Honda Civic that struck a Pontiac Grand Prix near the intersection of Cascades Parkway and Potomac View Road in Sterling around 6:15 p.m.

The man was struck by another car while attempting to cross a busy section of Route 7 near Campus Drive around 6:27 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were able to track the man with the assistance of a K9 unit after discovering two sets of footprints near the initial crash scene a short distance away.

The 41-year-old driver of the 2005 Honda Pilot was not injured in the crash. Witnesses tell Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputies the driver had a green light when he struck the fleeing man.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Honda Civic involved in the initial crash has not been located. Authorities says the vehicle’s owner is not involved in the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
