WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Washington Capitals forward Brooks Laich talked about his new girlfriend, American actress Julianne Hough, in his weekly interview with the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday.
The couple was spotted publicly for the first time together in Los Angeles last weekend, and have since been a hot subject of the tabloids, as Hough recently got out of a relationship with entertainment reporter Ryan Seacrest.
Laich tells the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan the couple began dating in December, but the two being spotted together walking her dogs over the weekend was his first visit with her at her California home.
They were photographed on their walk, as well as at the airport, in a car pulling out of her garage, and anywhere else the paparazzi could spot them, as Laich got his first dose of what it’s like dating a Hollywood star.
Laich on the Paparazzi:
“That was a new experience for me,” Laich told the Junkies. “I mean [I've] been around camera crews and whatever, pictures, or autograph seekers and stuff before, but those guys are relentless.”
“We’re just driving through town and they’re swerving in and out of traffic trying to follow you,” he said. “We just went for a hike one day and they’re running through the leaves and the bushes, and it’s like, ‘Oh, these guys are working hard.’”
How They Met:
Brooks credits his friend, Washington, D.C.-native and actor Teddy Sears for setting up the introduction.
“On set, apparently, he was talking with Julianne, and said he had recently just got married — just got back from his honeymoon — and then asked her if she’d been seeing anyone, and she said no or whatever, and I guess he was watching our hockey game at the time,” Laich explained.
“He always watches the game on Game Center on his iPad,” he said. “I guess he just showed her the iPad and said, ‘Well I’ve got a guy for you,’ or something.”
Laich says things didn’t progress from there for some time, because he was conscious of not wanting Sears to feel Laich was using him for his own personal gain.
On Their First Meeting:
“In December, Teddy and Melissa [Teddy Sears' wife] came back for a little wedding reception of theirs, back in D.C. here, and ‘Jules’ came out with them and I got to meet her at that point,” Laich said.
“Were you familiar with her work?” host Eric Bickel asked. “Did you watch her movies? Did you know her from Dancing With The Stars?
“To be honest, I had never seen an episode of Dancing With The Stars,” Laich said. “But in my defense, she had never seen a Caps game either until she met Teddy. But other than that, I don’t want to get into a whole lot of it; I’m kind of shy on my personal life.
“But she’s a cool, cool gal,” he said. “She’s just a sweetheart, very loving, very giving. She puts so much great out into the world. I’m a pretty lucky guy.”
