WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting of an 8-year-old girl in Southeast Washington on Friday afternoon.
D.C. Police say 19-year-old Karie Brown and 21-year-old Demtrius Patten, both of Southeast, were arrested Saturday and charged with assault with intent to kill.
The girl, who has been identified by family as Makayla Darden, was shot in the chest as she walked home Friday in the 1200 block of Valley Avenue SE. She was taken to a hospital and has since been released from surgery, but remains in critical condition.
Police say she was likely hit by gunfire during an unrelated shooting, but they have not released additional details.
“It broke my heart for a little baby that size to be just out and about minding her business, and something like that would happen,” said a neighbor close to Darden.
“She’s a sweet little girl,” she said. “Just a little girl.”
Police Chief Cathy Lanier thanked the members of the community for their support and commended the officers and detectives for quickly bringing this case to closure.
