CAMBRIDGE, Md. (CBS DC/AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is arguing that congressional Democrats up for re-election shouldn’t run away from the party’s values.

Even though President Barack Obama and some of his policies have lackluster approval ratings, Biden argued at a retreat for Democratic lawmakers Friday that voters side with them on the issues.

He said that includes the health care law, which has been plagued with roll-out problems. Still, he argued, a majority of Americans don’t want it repealed.

Biden also slammed his Republican colleagues for not being unified.

“There isn’t a Republican Party. I wish there was a Republican Party,” Biden said. “I wish there was one person we could sit across the table from and make a deal and make the compromise and know when you got up from the table that the deal was done.”

Biden suggested that Democrats run not just to defend the party’s policies, “but aggressively push” their agenda.

The East Coast snow storm forced Biden to delay his speech to the conference on Maryland’s Eastern shore a day. Many House Democrats skipped the retreat altogether and the ballroom Biden addressed was not full.
