LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Former Washington Redskins wide receiver Donté Stallworth says that any NFL team considering drafting Michael Sam is destined to be a loser if it can’t handle the media coverage that will accompany having the first openly gay player in league history on its roster.

In a series of 20 tweets, akin to a short essay, Stallworth cited examples of how teams can best handle the impending media crush. He said the Miami Dolphins’ poor handling of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin bullying scandal ultimately led to the demise of their season.

In contrast, the veteran free agent receiver said the way the New England Patriots handled the the Aaron Hernandez murder investigation and concerns over the health of tight end Rob Gronkowski enabled the team to flourish down the stretch.
