GOOCHLAND, Va. — A prosecutor on Monday dropped the more serious charges linking three people to the death of a Waynesboro reserve police officer.

Goochland County Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Stokes withdrew charges of principal in second degree to murder against Leslie Hope Casterlow, 49; Anthony D. Stokes Jr., 31; and Gert Wright, also known as Halisi Uhuru, 22, according to media reports. Casterlow and Stokes are from Manassas, Uhuru from Danville.

The prosecutor, who is not related to Anthony Stokes, said charges of felony gang participation were more appropriate and would remain. Those three defendants and 22-year-old Anthony L. White of Mineral, who also was charged Sunday with gang participation, appeared in Goochland County General District Court via a video feed from a Henrico County jail.

Judge Edward Carpenter ordered the four held until a March 10 hearing.

Kevin Wayne Quick, 45, was reported missing Feb. 1 after failing to show up as expected the night before to visit his girlfriend and their 4-month-old daughter in Louisa County. His body was found Thursday in a wooded area in Goochland County. Surveillance cameras recorded Quick’s vehicle at two banks before the SUV was discovered.

Virginia State Police are still investigating and have not said how Quick, a captain and 24-year veteran of the Waynesboro reserve force, died.

Two Louisa County siblings previously were charged with grand larceny related to the theft of Quick’s SUV, which was found Feb. 3 in Louisa County. Mersadies Shelton, 20, and Daniel Mathis, 18, are being held without bond.
