KABUL, Afghanistan (CBS DC/AP) — Taliban fighters say they captured a military dog belonging to NATO forces in Afghanistan.

They released a video showing the dog, a Belgian Malinois, with what appears to be military gear on its back, surrounded by heavily armed men.

The men in the video say the dog had a flashlight and GPS tracking device on its back.

The gunmen men also how off what appear to be weapons of the type used by U.S. Special Forces.

NATO confirms one of its dogs went missing during a mission in December but would not confirm any details.

The Taliban says the dog is American, but the Pentagon has denied this.

CNN reports the dog belongs to British forces in Afghanistan.

A Taliban spokesman says the dog is in good condition and is not being mistreated.

But dogs are not valued in Afghanistan and are often used for fighting.
