Earthquake-Like Tremors On Eastern Shore Caused By Navy Flight Training

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — The disturbance that some people felt and heard near Ocean City, Md., Thursday was the result of flight training led by Naval Air Station Patuxent River, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

The station confirmed to MEMA that flights conducted off the coast produced a sonic boom that caused residents of the town to report feeling earthquake-like tremors accompanied by a loud noise shortly before noon.

The U.S. Geological Survey and the Ocean City authorities received multiple inquiries from people who felt the ground shake.

By early afternoon, seismologists had analyzed the data from three nearby seismic stations to determine that the event was not an earthquake, as many suspected.

But, as can be seen below, the event did cause a huge spike on the Maryland Geological Survey’s real-time data chart.
