RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s inventory of cattle and calves declined 5 percent in the past year.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the number of cattle and calves totaled 1.53 million on Jan. 1, compared with 1.61 million a year ago. The department says Virginia’s inventory ranks 20th in the country and represents 1.7 percent of the U.S. total.

Beef cow inventory fell 4 percent to 657,000, while the milk cow inventory of 93,000 was down 1 percent from 2013. Steers 500 pounds and over totaled 170,000, down 13 percent.

Virginia’s sheep and lamb inventory totaled 83,000, down 5 percent from a year earlier.
