LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A naked man who jumped from a moving vehicle being pursued by police in Maryland early Tuesday morning turned out to be a kidnapping victim.
The car chase began when a Laurel police officer noticed a car without its headlights on traveling in the wrong direction of a one-way road around 1:15 a.m. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver continued going in the wrong direction on 5th Street and then made an illegal turn onto Route 198, again traveling in the wrong direction.
As the car slowed down to turn right onto Route 1, a man jumped out of the passenger side.
The pursuit continued into the Laurel Shopping Center and then again on Route 1. The driver then lost control and crashed into three parked cars at the Car America Dealership, located at 10052 N. Washington Boulevard in North Laurel.
The car came to rest upside down against a telephone pole. The two men still in the vehicle were injured and were evaluated by Emergency Medical Technicians on the scene. One was transported to Baltimore Shock Trauma and the other to Laurel Regional Hospital.
Both suspects, 27-year-old Donte Powell of D.C. and 26-year-old Douglas Mention, of South Carolina, will be charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, and weapons related charges. Police recovered a loaded .40 caliber handgun from the crashed vehicle.
The men who jumped from the car told investigators that he was a victim of kidnapping and armed robbery.
