WASHINGTON (CBS DC/AP) — A Texas congressman who is running for Senate is considering filing articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama.
Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, made the announcement on his Stockman for Senate website.
“I’m considering filing Articles of Impeachment against Barack Obama,” Stockman said.
The conservative lawmaker claims that Obama’s “goal is to eliminate our Constitutional republic.”
“Obama defiantly vowed not only to radically expand the reach of government from cradle to grave, but to smash the Constitution’s restrictions on government power while doing it,” Stockman said.
Stockman’s threat came a day after he walked out of Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
“I could not bear to watch as he continued to cross the clearly defined boundaries of the Constitutional separation of powers,” Stockman said in a statement Wednesday.
Stockman cast his first vote in nearly three weeks Tuesday after reports surfaced he went missing.
The Tea Party favorite voted Tuesday in favor of considering a bill that would prohibit taxpayer-funded abortions. It was his first House vote since Jan. 9.
Stockman has launched a long-shot challenge of Sen. John Cornyn in Texas’ GOP primary in March, but dropped out of sight recently.
He missed almost 20 House votes while making just one major campaign appearance in his home state.
Stockman resurfaced Monday, saying he’d been part of an official delegation that made a 10-day trip to Egypt, Israel and Russia.
He bristled at suggestions he’d been missing — but provided few details on where he was before or after the overseas tour.
